After hours of fannying around I have found the issue and it only affects Windows 7 with machines running multipul monitors.....

Generally to save you the hasstle;
- Navigate to your SteamApps folder (usually "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\[Username]\counter-strike source")
- Right click the "hl2.exe"
- On the compatibility tab check the checkbox "Disable Desktop composition" and apply the changes
- Now start CSS as usual

 ok,ignore me! rebooted steam,now decrypting.ok,done,plays fine,ignore last 2 posts!

 ok,having problems. click to play,get msg saying "please wait while steam unlocks game files" under that it says its decrypting files but its not doing anything,then it goes off!
p.s i got vista

Many folk are having problems setting up their servers but I 'think' ours is now working so hopefully we can be on line tonight.

Hi Guys,
Having major problems as of last night CS:S would not load at all. Have checked graphics drivers and even done a restore to a few days ago only thing I can think of is I installed COD4 MW (1 st version not new one) and I think it update to DX11 but this should not make a differance as DX is back compatable (?) everything else works in steam bar CS:S, however I did notice that from exiting CS:S when it was working I was getting a HL2.exe problem and this is the error message that comes up.
If I load CS:S from steam games I get the start screen (two guys with guns) but no menu, however when i mouse over where menu items should be you can hear the mouse over sound, click the bottom one and hit enter and it will quit the game... I have tried launching via Servers, click Dads server, game launches get splash screen with loading.... in the corner then it crahes out with HL2.exe has stopped working....
At a loss, just wondered if anyone else has experianced this error?
